"I don’t smoke but I keep a match box in my pocket, when my heart slips towards sin, I burn the matchstick & heat my palm with it, then say to myself, ‘Ali you can’t even bear this heat, how would you bear the unbearable heat of hellfire?’” - Muhammad Ali"

step 431: keep a lighter/match box in your pocket. to be filed under: effective ways to tame your nafs//check yo self. even though abstractly talking about hellfire is scary enough, this technique is effective, too, for those situations in which you can’t mentally talk yourself out of it or need instant/immediate results. in the act of reaching for a lighter you are training your nafs to get used to, “NO” as well as looking at your situation from an outsider’s perspective (or even the “how-will-i-feel-about-this-tomorrow”-perspective). if those two aren’t enough to make you stop then you will naturally pull away as soon as you feel a LITTLE bit of heat and then naturally pull away from whatever your “heart” was telling you to do.

"Allah manages everything in the heavens and earth—the sun, the moon, the stars—with perfection, and yet we don’t trust Him to manage our lives!"

There are certain situations in life when all your eggs are actually just in one basket. Tawakul(faith) plays a fundamental role in preventing chaos in our lives. The people who help us in the difficult times are just a part of Allah’s mechanism in easing our difficulties. What truly benefits us during the tough times are patience and prayer. Look up to no one but Allah.
